Aratek

Biometrics hardware vendor (terminals, modules, mobile enrollment) used in civil ID, elections, and access control; product lines and conference demos have included gait and multimodal recognition alongside fingerprint and face.

Background

Aratek manufactures FBI/ISO-style fingerprint scanners, rugged tablets for field enrollment, and OEM modules integrated into kiosks and gates. Customers include governments and system integrators in multiple regions. Like other biometric OEMs, Aratek’s roadmap has expanded to face and behavioral modalities as customers request contactless and continuous identification options.

Harms and concerns

National ID and election enrollment programs collect biometrics from entire populations with long retention; misuse or breach affects millions. Cheap hardware can spread biometric collection to smaller agencies and private integrators with weak oversight. Gait or similar passive biometrics reduce opportunities for meaningful consent in public space.
