Fujitsu

Global IT and electronics firm; known in biometrics for palm vein authentication and for gait recognition R&D—identifying people from body motion on surveillance-style video.

Background

Fujitsu has demonstrated gait-based identification as a complement to face and iris when resolution or angle is poor. Commercialization paths often target security, transportation hubs, and smart-city pilots alongside broader Fujitsu system-integration business. PalmSecure vein readers are a separate, contactless hand-based product line common in banking and access control.

Harms and concerns

Gait can be captured from ordinary CCTV without subjects’ cooperation, making it a strong candidate for mass tracking if linked to identity databases. Research-stage tech can move into production with little public debate. Combining gait with face or payment systems increases the completeness of behavioral profiles.

Technologies (overview)
  • Gait recognition – video analytics for walk-based identification
  • Palm vein (PalmSecure) – contactless vascular pattern matching for access and transactions
  • Systems integration – sold as part of larger security and IT projects
