Genetec
Montreal-based vendor of unified video management, ALPR, and access control software deployed by cities, transit agencies, campuses, and police departments worldwide.
Background
Genetec was founded in 1997 and is one of the largest enterprise video management system (VMS) vendors globally. Unlike Flock or Axon, Genetec sells primarily to large institutions—cities, airports, transit systems, universities—rather than directly to homeowners or small police departments. Their platforms integrate cameras, ALPR, access control, and analytics from many hardware vendors, positioning Genetec as the software "brain" of a large surveillance deployment.
Harms and concerns
Genetec's unified platforms enable the same 24/7 monitoring, data aggregation, and cross-agency sharing as other RTCC vendors. Their city-wide deployments can connect thousands of cameras and ALPR readers into a single searchable system, dramatically lowering the barrier to tracking individuals across a metro area. When integrated with facial recognition modules or Briefcam video analytics (a Genetec partner), the platform can identify and track individuals by face or appearance across the entire camera network.
Because Genetec is camera-agnostic, municipalities that already have camera infrastructure from Axis, Hikvision, Bosch, or other vendors can layer Genetec's analytics on top without hardware replacement—making surveillance expansion cheap and fast.
Software products
- Security Center – flagship unified platform combining VMS (video management), ALPR, and access control in one interface; used for city-wide and enterprise deployments
- AutoVu – Genetec's ALPR platform; reads plates from fixed or mobile cameras and integrates with LEARN and other shared databases; includes parking enforcement and law enforcement modules
- Clearance – cloud-based digital evidence management and sharing platform, similar to Axon's Evidence.com
- Mission Control – situational awareness and incident management layer on top of Security Center, used in RTCC deployments
- Genetec Citigraf – AI-assisted operations platform that correlates sensor data and generates alerts for police dispatchers
Hardware compatibility
Genetec Security Center is designed to be hardware-agnostic and supports cameras and sensors from hundreds of manufacturers, including:
- Axis Communications – Swedish camera maker; industry leader for IP cameras in government and enterprise
- Bosch Security Systems – fixed and PTZ cameras commonly integrated with Genetec
- Hanwha Vision (Samsung) – Korean camera maker with strong US government and law enforcement sales
- Motorola Solutions ALPR units – Vigilant fixed and mobile readers can feed into Genetec AutoVu
- Briefcam – video analytics engine (acquired by Canon) that layers face, appearance, and object search on top of Genetec footage archives
